Russian Tourists Get Arrested after Entering US Army Base
The women, Kristina and Natasha from Samara, were reportedly on a road trip near San Diego when they grew hungry and used a navigation app to locate the nearest McDonald’s. The GPS allegedly directed them onto a route that led directly onto the military base. They stopped in a parking area, where soldiers detained them and impounded their car. They have been in custody for at least three days.
The Russian Embassy stated that US immigration authorities currently hold the women at a deportation center while consular officials work to clarify the circumstances. The embassy noted that the US State Department has not yet formally notified Russian diplomats of the detention.
Local sources say that incidents of accidental trespassing at Camp Pendleton occur frequently. How travelers are treated—whether turned away or arrested—appears to depend on the discretion of the on-duty military personnel.
