Ten Million Tourists Visit S. Africa in 2025

(MENAFN) South Africa’s tourism sector welcomed over 10 million international visitors in 2025, marking a record high and highlighting the industry’s role in economic growth and job creation, according to reports.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the country recorded 10.48 million arrivals between January and December, a 17.6% increase from 2024. “Tourism is working. Tourism is delivering. And tourism will remain a cornerstone of inclusive growth, investment, and job creation in South Africa,” she said.

At a press briefing, de Lille emphasized that tourism policy is economic policy, pointing to rising investor confidence, sector recovery, and expanding employment opportunities. The country’s appeal was further boosted after being named Best Destination: Africa 2025 by the Travel Weekly Reader’s Choice Awards.

The government has endorsed a Tourism Growth Partnership Plan developed with industry stakeholders to drive further expansion. Key measures include easing travel through the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for markets such as India, China, Mexico, and Indonesia, which is expected to generate 80,000–100,000 jobs. New air routes, including Qantas’ Perth–Johannesburg service and Air France’s seasonal daily flights to Cape Town, are also improving connectivity.

Tourism currently supports roughly 1.8 million direct and indirect jobs, with one job created for approximately every 13 international arrivals. De Lille credited industry partners, content creators, and tourism workers for helping the country surpass the 10 million visitor milestone.
