Officials state terrorist cell demolished in tourist town
The group was reportedly affiliated with the Hasm movement, which emerged in 2015 and is classified by Egyptian authorities as a terrorist organization. According to the ministry, the cell was operating under the guidance of leaders based in Türkiye and was preparing to infiltrate operatives into Egypt to carry out coordinated attacks.
Officials stated that Hasm was in the process of reviving its operations, with plans targeting economic and security institutions. Five key individuals were named as leaders of the alleged plot, including Ahmed Muhammad Abdel Razek Ahmed Ghanim—who had previously received a death sentence in absentia. He had illegally entered Egypt through the desert and was hiding in a Cairo apartment alongside another wanted man, Ehab Abdel Latif Muhammad Abdel Qader, who had also been convicted in a separate terrorism case.
Security forces launched the raid after obtaining clearance from the Supreme State Security Prosecution. According to the ministry, the suspects opened fire randomly at officers and nearby areas, prompting a gun battle. All the militants were killed, and a passing civilian was fatally shot. An officer was also wounded while attempting to rescue the civilian.
Authorities said the raid thwarted a broader plan by Hasm to renew its militant activities. SkyNewsArabia recently reported the appearance of a video attributed to Hasm, which called for armed action and threatened terrorist attacks in Egypt.
Hasm’s last known major attack occurred in 2019, when it was blamed for a deadly car bombing near Cairo’s Cancer Institute that killed 22 people.
Though the Muslim Brotherhood was officially outlawed in Egypt in 2013 and labeled a terrorist group, its leaders denied any affiliation with Hasm in 2019.
